Sefa Önal was born in Istanbul in 1931. He graduated from Haydarpaşa High School. When he was a student, he started writing stories. Since 1945, he has written stories and screen plays professionally. Önal worked as a desk editor in some magazines such as Hafta, Yelpaze and Peyami Safa’s Türk Düşüncesi. He published the story book Dünya’nın En Güzel Gemisi. In 1953, his first screen play was shot as a film Kanlı Para. Since 1960, Önal has made a significant contribution to Turkish Films (Yeşimçam) and received many awards including Altın Koza, Altın Portakal, and Gümüş Palmiye (in Italy). In 1973, he directed the film "İnleyen Nağmeler”, in which famous actor Zeki Müren performed. Önal was awarded the "Best Screenwriter of the Year” by Turkish newspapers and magazines several times. In 2000, he received Sadri Alışık Theatre and Cinema Honorary Award. Önal was recorded in the Guinness World Records Book with his 395 works. In 2010, he was awarded Golden Career Prize by Muğla University. As of today, he continues to write scripts for films and TV dramas. He also teaches about scripts at the Türvak Film and Television School.
