Ezel Akay was born in 1961. After graduating from the Faculty of Engineering at Bogaziçi University, he studied theater at Villanova University in the US. He worked as a commercial scriptwriter, theater director, actor, production assistant before entering film production as a founding partner of IFR. In IFR, Akay has directed over 500 commercial films such as “İş Bankası-Sağduyu”, “İş Bankası-Atatürk”, “Telsim-Çıldıran Müdür”, “Kredi Kart-Migros”, “Mio-Türkiye’ye Doğan Temizlik Güneşi”, “Pimapen” and “Microsoft-Korsan Yazılım”. In 1996, he produced the film “Tabutta Rövaşata” (Somersault in a Coffin) with Derviş Zaim and won many awards in national and international film festivals. As an executive producer, Akay produced Yeşim Ustaoğlu’s “Güneşe Yolculuk” (Journey to the Sun) and won numerous awards in many national and international festivals including Berlin Film Festival. In addition, he produced Semir Aslanyürek’s “Şelale” (2001) and Ahmet Uluçay’s “Karpuz Kabuğundan Gemiler Yapmak” (2004) and received many prizes. In 2004, Akay directed the long film “Neredesin Firuze” for the first time, in which Haluk Bilginer, Özcan Deniz and Demet Akbağ performed leading roles. In 2006, Akay also directed the film “Hacivat Karagöz Neden Öldürüldü?” in which Haluk Bilginer and Beyazıt Öztürk performed leading roles. As of today, Akay continues to direct and produce films within the company İFR A.Ş.
