Hülya Koçyiğit was born in Istanbul in 1947. She grew up in Istanbul and finished Atatürk Girls′ High School in Ankara. She joined the Istanbul Municipality Theatre during her middle education. She then studied at Ankara State Art Academy′s Ballet Department.
Koçyiğit decided to venture into cinema in 1963. Her debut film was "Susuz Yaz (Dry Summer)", which went on to win the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival. This honor was the first of its kind ever bestowed upon a Turkish movie. "Derman", a film she starred in was the first Turkish film that played in five continents. Another one of her famous films, "Kurbağalar", was the first Turkish movie that was sold to international televisions. Koçyiğit has acted in over 180 films and 4 TV dramas. Among the famous directors she has worked together with: Lütfü Akad, Atıf Yılmaz, Şerif Gören, Metin Erksan, Orhan Aksoy, Memduh Ün, Ertem Eğilmez, Osman F. Seden and Halit Refiğ. Koçyiğit has received numerous awards in various international film festivals in Turkey and abroad. She received the distinction of "Turkish State Artist" in 1991.
Koçyiğit is one of the founders of the SO-DER, and was chairman between 1991 and 1992. She still serves in the administrative board of the SO-DER.
