Emine Emel Balcı was born in 1984. She graduated from the Department of Cinema-TV in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. After working as scriptwriter, she began shooting her own films. With her first short documentary film "Women of the Lake" (2007), Balcı received the Best Documentary Film Award in the 15th Adana Golden Ball Festival, the 13th Nurnberg Turkish-German Film Festival, the 8th Safranbolu International Documentary Film Festival and the 19th Istanbul International Short Film Festival. Her second non-dialogued fiction "The Waiting" (2009) followed it and was screened in many national and international film festivals. It was broadcasted in France and Austria. Balcı′s documentary film "Ich Liebe Dich" (2012) is a production of Turkish company Motiva Film, co-produced by Unafilm in Germany and Zdf Das Kleine Fernsehspiel. She attended the 65th Berlinale with her film "Until I lose my Breath" (2015). Balcı currently continues her work in Istanbul.
