Dr. Emin Alper was born in Konya in 1974. After graduating from Boğaziçi University, he completed his master′s and doctoral degree in Modern Turkish History at his alma mater. He is known for his short films such as "Mektup" (2005) and "Rıfat" (2006). In 2012, his first long film "Tepenin Ardı" (Beyond the Hill) won 16 national and international awards including "Caligari Film Award" at the Berlin Film Festival and the "Best Film Award" at the Asia Pacific Film Awards as well as the Istanbul Film Festival. In 2013, he received the "Best Director Award" for his film "Tepenin Ardı" at the 24th Ankara International Film Festival. His film "Abluka (Frenzy)" (2015) won the Special Jury Prize in the competition section of the 72nd Venice International Film Festival. Alper also received the Best Director Award for "Abluka" from the Turkish Film Critics Association in 2016. In 2017, he was awarded the Art Grand Prix by the Academy of Art in Berlin.

Dr. Alper teaches at the Department of Social Science at Istanbul Technical University. He also writes on cinema and politics at several magazines such as Tarih ve Toplum, Birikim, MeseleAltyazı, and Görüntü.
