Vedat Türkali was born in Samsun in 1919 as Abdülkadir Demirkan. He graduated from the Department of Turkish Language and Literature in the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University in 1942. He taught Turkish Literature at Maltepe Military High School and Kuleli Military High School. In 1951-1958, he was arrested due to political actions. Türkali established Gar Publications with Rıfat Ilgaz. He wrote many poems and articles and published them as books. Among his works are "Bir Gün Tek Başına" (1974), "Mavi Karanlık" (1983), "Yeşilçam Dedikleri Türkiye," "Bu Gemi Nereye" (1985) and "Tek Kişilik Ölüm" (1990), "Komünist" (2001), "Kayıp Romanlar" (2004), "Yalancı Yanıklar Kahvesi" (2009) and "Bitti Bitti Bitmedi" (2014). In 1958 Türkali started working in cinema. He wrote over 40 film scripts such as "Dlandırcılar Şahı" (1960) and directed three films "Kara Çarsaflı Gelin" (1975), "Karanlıkta Uyananlar" (1964), and "Bedrana" (1974). Türkali is the author of four theater plays. He received many national and international awards including a Beyaz Mart Literature Honorary Award (2016), an Orhan Kemal Novel Prize (1976), a first place in the Milliyet Publication Novel Competition (1974), a TRT Play Award (1970), and the Best Scenario prize in the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival (1965). The year from May 1, 2004 to May 1, 2005 was declared the “Year of Vedat Türkali” with the support of intellectuals, artists, cultural and artistic institutions and human rights activists. Türkali passed away in Yalova in 2016.
