Tahsin Yücel was born in Elbistan, Kahramanmaraş in 1933. He graduated from the Department of French Language and Literature in the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University in 1960. While studying at university, he worked for the Varlık Publications. His first story book "Uçan Daireler" was published by the Varlik Publications in 1954. He then published many story books, novels such as "Haney Yaşamalı" (1955), "Düşlerin Ölümü" (1958) and “Mutfak Çıkmazı" (1959). He received many awards for his literary works including Sait Faik Hikaye Award (1956) for "Uçan Daireler" and Turkish Language Association Story Award (1959) for "Düşlerin Ölümü," Orhan Kemal Story Award (1993) for "Peygamberin Son Beş Günü" and Ömer Asım Aksoy Award (2002) for "Yalan."

Yücel continued his academic career and studied on semiotics in Paris. After he returned to Istanbul, Yücel obtained his doctoral degree in Semiotic studies at Istanbul University in 1969. He became an Associate Professor with his work "Figures et messages dans la Comédie humaine" in 1972 and a full Professor with his work "Les Coordines Narratives" in 1978. Yücel retired from teaching at Istanbul University in 2000.

Besides his academic works, Yücel continued publishing his novels and stories such as “Mutfak Çıkmazı” (1960), "Yaşadıktan Sonra" (1969), "Dönüşüm" (1975), "Ben ve Öteki" (1983), "Aykırı Öyküler" (1989), "Peygamberin Son Beş Günü" (1992), “Bıyık Söylencesi” (1995), "Komşular" (1999), “Yalan” (2002), “Gökdelen” (2006), “Golyan Devrimi” (2008) and “Sonuncu” (2010). Yücel also translated many literary works from Turkish to French and Swedish.  Prof. Dr. Yücel passed away in Istanbul in 2016.
