Veysel Çolak was born in Cevizli village, the district of Rize in 1954. He finished primary and middle school in Turgutlu and then studied at the Department of Turkish Language of the Diyarbakır Educational Institute in 1977. He graduated from the Department of Turkish Language and Literature in the Faculty of Letters at Ankara University in 1992. His first poem was published in Democrat Izmir Newspaper in 1973. After the year of 1977, he taught in Malatya, Manisa and Izmir. Çolak published the poetry magazine “Dize” in Izmir. He has participated in many competitions and received lots of awards. His poems have been published in many magazines such as Milliyet Sanat, Yazko, Türkiye Yazıları, Varlık, Edebiyat ve Eleştiri, Adam Sanat and Dize. He was one of the four poets in the finals of the “the Most Successful Young Poet” competition in 1974. Çolak was one of the poets who started the New Poem movement. He used the signs of Mehmet Pınar and Göksu Acar for his works. He has also published essays, annuals ("Poet Annuals" between 2002 and 2008) and analysis on poem. He is a member of Association for Man of Letters, Writers Syndicate of Turkey and the PEN Writers Club.
