Şaban Abak was born in Aşkale, Erzurum in 1963. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at Ankara University, he studied at the Department of Radio-Television-Cinema in the Faculty of Communication at Istanbul University. His early poetry works were published in “Hürsöz”, “Aziziye” and Doğu ekspres newspapers. Since 1983, Abak has published his poetry works and writings in many literary magazines such as “Töre”, “İkindiyazılan”, “Albatros”, “Kayıtlar”, Mavera”, “Dergâh”, “Yalnızardıç”, “Yediiklim”, “Hece”, “Şehrengiz”, “Kılavuz” and “Kaşgar”; and newspapers including Zaman, Yeni Şafak and Selam.

Abak received the first award in the poetry competition, held by the Turkish Religious Foundation (1981), and in the Eskişehir Yunus Emre poetry competition (1986). In 1987, he began working as a chief editor at Mavera publications. Abak published his first poetry book “Bağdat’tan Dönen Şiirler” (Yediiklim publications) in 1990. He is a board member of the Turkish Writers’ Association.
