Adalet Ağaoğlu was born in Nallıhan district of Ankara in 1929. After finishing her primary education in Nallıhan, she moved to Ankara with her family in 1938. She graduated from the Department of French Language and Literature in the Faculty of Language and History-Geography at Ankara University in 1950. Ağaoğlu started her career writing poems. She then concentrated on writing plays. In 1946, she published her theater critique in the Ulus newspaper. Between 1948 and 1950, she published her poems in the Kaynak magazine. From 1951 to 1970, Ağaoğlu served in the TRT. She also wrote the radio play “Aşk Şarkısı’nı” for Ankara Radio. While she worked at Ankara Radio, she founded the private theater “Meydan Sahnesi” with Kartal Tibet, Üner İlsever, Çetin Köroğlu, and Nur Sabuncu and published the “Meydan Sahne” magazine. In 1953, Ağaoğlu went to Paris to research theater. In the same year, the play “Bir Piyes Yazalım”, which she wrote with Sevin Uzungören, was performed in Ankara.

Her first novel “Ölmeye Yatmak” was published in 1973. With other works such as “Bir Düğün Gecesi” (1979) and “Hayır” (1989), she has received many awards. As an author, a playwright, and a human rights activist, she became one of the most prized novelists in Turkey. For her perception of subtle and overt changes in modern Turkish society and her writing entitled "Modernism and Social Change," Ağaoğlu received the "Turkish Presidency Merit Award" in 1995. In 1998, she received an Honorary Ph.D. from Anadolu University followed by the Ph.D. of Humane Letters from Ohio State University. Currently, Ağaoğlu continues to work in Istanbul.
