Nurdan Gürbilek was born in Kütahya in 1956. She graduated from the Department of English Language and Literature in the Faculty of Education at Boğaziçi University. She completed her master’s degree at her alma mater. She has written essays in newspapers and magazines such as “Akıntıya Karşı”, “Zemin”, and “Defter ve Virgül”. Her first book “Vitrinde Yaşamakta” was published by Metis publications in 1992. Gürbilek collected essays of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, Oğuz Atay, Yusuf Atılgan, and Bilge Karasu in the book “Yer Değiştiren Gölde” (Metis, 1995) and “Ev Ödevi” (Metis, 1999). She compiled Walter Benjamin’s writing in the book “Son Bakışta Aşk” (Metis publications, 1993). Her essays in “Vitrinde Yaşamak” and “Kötü Çocuk Türk” were translated into English and published in “The New Cultural Climate in Turkey: Living in a Shop Window” (Zed, 2010). Gürbilek won 2010 Erdal Öz Literature Award. In 2011, she received the Cevdet Kudret Literature Award for her book “Benden Önce Bir Başkası”.
