Ahmet Altan was born in Ankara in 1950. He is the son of renowned writer and politician Çetin Altan and elder brother of economist Mehmet Altan. He finished middle and high school in several cities in Turkey. He graduated from the School of Economics at the Middle East Technical University. Altan began working as a journalist at the age of 24. For more than twenty years, he has served as a journalist in all stages of the profession, from being a night shift reporter to editor in chief in various newspapers. In 1987, he became a columnist and wrote columns in several Turkish newspapers such as Hürriyet, Milliyet and Radikal. In 1990, Altan took a break to work as a journalist when he was a publication director, and started preparing many TV programs. Because of his writing, Altan had to undergo a trial. In 1995, he was charged and condemned to prison for one year and half. His first fiction novel “Dört Mevsim” was published in 1982. Since then, Altan has published many novels, essays and poems. He won the Yunus Nadi Roman Prize with his novel “Kılıç Yarası Gibi” (1998) in 1999. As of today, Altan is the editor in chief and lead columnist of Taraf, a daily Turkish newspaper.
