Hasan Ali Toptaş was born in 1958 in Çal, Denizli. He is one of the prominent writers of contemporary Turkish fiction. Toptaş published his first story collection "Bir Gülüşün Kimliği" in 1987, and issued some of his stories in another book, titled "Yoklar Fısıltısı" in 1990.

His story collection "Ölü Zaman Gezginleri" was awarded in 1992 by the Municipality of Çankaya and the literary journal Damar. In the same year his novel "Sonsuzluğa Nokta" received a mansion from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and published by the Ministry.

In 1994 Toptaş received the Yunus Nadi Novel Prize by "Gölgesizler". His "Bin Hüzünlü Haz" was awarded Cevdet Kudret Literature Prize in 1999. Toptaş has also published an aphoristic book titled "Yalnızlıklar" and another book for children titled "Ben Bir Gürgen Dalıyım". His book “Uykuların Doğusu” (2005) received an Award of Orhan Kemal in 2006.
