Erdal Alova was born in Ankara in 1952. He studied at the Engineering department of Middle East Technical University, but he quit his studies at the university and moved to Istanbul. Alova then worked as a journalist, translator, and editor. After working at the Gümüşlük Academy for a while, he established a poetry workshop. His first poem "Issız Gül" was published in the Yeni journal. Since then Alova has published his poems in many literary journals such as Yeni Dergi, Militan, and Sanat Emeği. He has published many poetry books including "En Son Çıkan Şarkılar" (1980), "Giz Dökümü" (1989) and "Bitik Kent" (1995). In 1996 he received a Cemal Süreya Poetry Award for his book "Bitik Kent." In 2009 he won a Behçet Necatigil Poetry Award for his book "Toplu Şiirler (2008-1973)." In 2016 he received 71st Yunus Nadi Poetry Award for his work "Birinci Çoğul Şarkı." Alova has translated various poetry books into Turkish. He currently continues his work in Istanbul.
