Turkish-American scholar Dr. Erdağ Göknar is Assistant Professor of Turkish Studies at Duke University as well as a literary translator. After graduating from the University of Oregon in 1994, he completed his master′s degree (1998) and doctoral degree (2004) in Turkish literature and culture at the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization at the University of Washington, Seattle.

He is the award-winning translator of Orhan Pamuk′s best-selling novel, "My Name is Red" (Knopf, 2001), which ushered Pamuk onto the international stage and contributed to his selection as Nobel laureate. The novel was awarded the 2003 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. Göknar′s translation of Atiq Rahimi′s "Earth and Ashes" (Harcourt, 2004) was shortlisted for the same award. In 2008, Göknar translated famous modernist Turkish author Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar′s iconic novel "A Mind at Peace" (Archipelago, 2008), which was supported by a translation grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Currently, Dr. Göknar is a fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center, where he is writing a book on the modern Turkish novel in Turkish and Orhan Pamuk′s place in Turkey′s literary tradition.
