Prof. Ayla Salman was born in Balıkesir in 1943. She graduated from the Textile Arts Department at Istanbul State Fine Arts Academy in 1966. She worked as a designer at Vakko Textile Factory between 1966 and 1967. She then went to Canada and worked at the Dally Display Company. Between 1969 and 1970, she received a fellowship from the Dutch Government and completed post graduate program on textile weavings at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Since 1971, Salman has been teaching at the Textile Arts Department in the Faculty of Fine Art of Marmara University. She has also woven artistic and decorative tapestries and weavings at her workshop. She uses natural fibers such as sisal, cotton, linen and raffia, and dyes them by herself. She has had numerous solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. Between 1978 and 1980, she served as a director in the Turkish Plastic Artist Association. Her works can be seen in many private collections in Turkey and foreign countries.
