Prof. Dr. Mehmet Zeki Sönmez was born in Ahlat in 1945. After graduating from the Department of Art History in the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University in 1971, he started working in the Faculty of Architecture at Istanbul Technical University in 1974. In 1979, he completed his doctoral degree at his alma mater. In 1980, Sönmez transferred from Technical University to Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, where he became an Assistant Professor (1982), Associate Professor (1996), and full professor (2002). Prof. Sönmez has also served as director in the Social Sciences Institute, director in the Research and Application Center on Turkish Art History, and director in a Vocational School. Besides Mimar Sinan University, he has taught at Istanbul Technical University, Eskişehir Anadolu University, Muğla University, and Marmara University. Prof. Dr. Sönmez has participated in many national and international symposiums and conferences; and published numerous books and articles on Turkish Arts and Ottoman architecture.
