Prof. Dr. Sitare Bakır Turan graduated from the Department of Traditional Turkish Art at Mimar Sinan University in 1986. She continued her study and completed her master’s degree at SOAS in London (1987) and doctoral degree at Istanbul University (1994). Prof. Bakır started to work as a research assistant at the Department of traditional Turkish Art in the Faculty of Fine Art of Mimar Sinan University. She participated in the 5th Competition of Turkish Decorative Art which was organized by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and won the first prize in the tile category. In the same year, her tile designs were awarded at a private mansion named Al-Haret in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. In 1995 she became an assistant Professor and served as a head of tile and ceramic program. In the same year, she participated in the “Hüsn-ü Aşk” Sheikh Galip Exhibition and M.S.U teacher’s exhibition in Istanbul. Prof. Bakır also participated in the exhibition under the seminar titled “Arabesque in Traditional Crafts of OIC countries”, which was held by IRCICA and Syrian Ministry of Culture. In 2000 she received a title of associate professor and became a Vice Director of Social Science Institute in 2001. Between 2002 and 2006 Prof. Bakır served as a head of the Department of traditional Turkish Art in the Faculty of Fine Arts. In 2007 she received a title of tenured professor. Prof. Dr. Bakır has attended at many international congresses and symposiums and participated in research and international meetings on Turkish Art. She has numerous publications on Turkish tiles and ceramics. Prof. Dr. Bakır is a member of: Executive Committee Member of MSGSÜ, Research and Application Center for Turkish Art History (09.07.1997-), Society of Art History (07.05.2003-), Türk Kültürüne Hizmet Vakfı (as a trustee) (27.05.2004-), Sanat Yazarları ve Eleştirmenleri Derneği (SAYED) (22.07.2005-) and Mimar Sinan Research Center (as an executive committee member), (04.10.2007-).
