Prof. Dr. Hakkı Acun was born in Yozgat in 1950. He received his doctoral degree in Turkish Art History at the Department of Art History in the Institute of Social Sciences of Hacettepe University. He served as Chair of the History Department at Sivas Cumhuriyet University (1983-1988) after working as an assistant at Hacettepe University (1976-1983). Dr. Acun then taught at the Department of Painting-Work in the Faculty of Education of Gazi University from 1988 to 1992. He became an Associate Professor in 1991 and full Professor in 1997. Dr. Acun served as Vice Dean in the Faculty of Letters in 1997-2000. He serves as Head of the Department of Art History in the Faculty of Letters and of Department of Fine Arts at Gazi University.

Prof. Dr. Acun has participated in various national and international symposiums and conferences and published many books and numerous articles on Ottoman History and Art. He has received many awards for his contribution to Turkish Culture. Dr. Acun is a member of various professional organizations and editorial and advisory Boards such as the International Congress of Turkish Arts (2006-), the Atatürk Culture Center Editorial Board (2000-), the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism Editorial Board (2002-), and Erzurum Foundation for Culture and Education, Ekev Academic magazine Editorial Board (2007-). Since 2006, he is a part of an international board of experts set up by UNESCO. Prof. Dr. Acun currently serves as Vice-chancellor at Gazi University.
