Prof. Dr. Ahmet Taşağıl was born in Kocaeli in 1964. He graduated from the Department of History in the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University in 1985. In the same year, he went to Taiwan to study on Central Asian History at the Ethnology Research Institute of Cheng-chih University, and learned Chinese language at Shinh-fan University. He also researched many Chinese documents related to Turkish History at the Documentation Center. After returning to Turkey in the end of 1986, Taşağıl completed his masters and doctoral degree (1991) at Istanbul University. In 1987, he started working as a research assistant at the Faculty of Science and Letters of Mimar Sinan University. He received the title of Assistant Professorship (1992), Associate Professorship (1995), and Professorship (2001). Between 2007 and 2008, Taşağıl served as a director in the Institute of Social Sciences at Mimar Sinan University. In 2008, he served as a vice chancellor. Since 2009, Taşağıl has served as a vice-chancellor and chair in the Department of History at Mimar Sinan University.

Taşağıl worked as a guest lecturer at the International Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Turkish-Kazak University (1997-1998 and 1999-2000). Between 2001 and 2002, he served as a Dean in the Faculty of History and Philosophy. Between 2004 and 2005, he taught at the Department of History of Manas University in Kirgizstan.

Prof. Taşağıl has participated in various seminars, conferences, panels and symposiums in Turkey and abroad. Currently, he continues to teach at Mimar Sinan University.
