Ottoman Mihrab Surround

Ottoman Mihrab Surround
Egypt. Late 19th century

This very large, elegant embroidery would have been hung so that it surrounded a mosque mihrab--the niche indicating the direction of Mecca which worshipers faced during their prayers. It is not in perfect condition: there are frayed areas, primarily in the dark brown ground fabric border areas where iron oxides in the dyes have corroded the fibers. Thus this very large, dramatic hanging will not suit someone who demands mint condition. It was purchased together with a companion piece that appears later on our Ottoman inventory page. HOLD.
