STRAWBERRY (FRAGARIA SPP.)

Strawberry (Turkish: çilek) is the common name for several species of plants in the genus Fragaria in the rose family (Rosaceae) and the fruits of these plants. Six named varieties are grown in Turkey. These are the large fruited frenk çileği (“Frankish strawberry”), the sera çileği (greenhouse strawberry), which appears off-season, the very fragrant Arnavutköy variety named after a quarter of Istanbul where it was once grown in quantity (also called Osmanli or Ottoman strawberry), the Ereğli strawberry generally used in preserves, the Bursa strawberry and the wild strawberries that grow in the forests.
